When he came of age ho inherited £110,000. He owned racehorses and a luxurious steam yacht, and gave largo parties. His widowed mother, with an incom.e of £10,000, died while Smith was serving in the trenches in France. He first married Ruth Wynne, the daughter of a former Postmaster-General of tho United States. The marriago was dissolved, and he then married his present wife, a wartime typist, whom he met in a lawyer's office.
