DEWSBURY DEFEATED BY SMALL
SCORE,

In the opening game of the tour, the New Zealand League team defeated Dewsbury by 13 points to 9. Tho match was watched by 10,000 people. The New Zealanders wero handicapped in the first half of the game by a strong wind and a lack of acquaintance with the intricacies of the rules, especially in regard to tho scrimmage, in which thoy did not obtain possession as frequently as they might. They were also misled somewhat by the referee's blue coat, which resembled the players' jerseys. The referee later controlled the game without a coat.
A penalty goal by Lyman (Dewsbury) was tho only score in tho first half, tho same kicker missing two penalties, the spell ending Dewsbury 2, New Zealand nil.
'In the second spell the Now Zealanders greatly improved. Hall (Now Zealand) broke away, and passed to Saunders, who kicked, a Dewsbury player pulling him down after ho had parted with the ball, and tho referee awarded a penalty. Dufty made no mistake. New Zealand 2, Dewsbury 2. Tho Dewsbury players then initiated a successful run, Kyan scoring a try, which Lyman converted. Dewsbury 7, New Zealand 2. Then the New Zealanders gallantly rose to the occasion, and Kirwan and Davidson combined in a run which ended in a score, Dufty goaling. New Zealand 7, Dewsbury 7. Shortly afterwards Lyman again kicked a penalty goal. Dewsbury £>, New Zealand 7. Avery then ran in for Now Zealand, but Dufty's kick struck the upright. Now Zealand 10, Dewsbury 9. Finally a brilliant run, iv which Hall, Avery, and Mouatt took part, ended in the latter scoring. The try was not converted, the game ending:— New Zealand 13 Dewsbury ... 9 Critics declare that Hall is a glutton for work, while Co*, and Gardner are also described- as 1. -'*.•__ It is expected that the visitors will give better displays in the future. The New Zealand players missed many chances owing to deefctive passes.
