MAORIS WIN FIRST MATCH
MARSEILLES OLYMPIQUE
BEATEN
A CRICKET SCORE.
(United Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received 13th September, 1.30 p.m.) PARIS, 12th September.
In its opening match of the tour, tho Maori Rugby team defeated Marseilles Olympique by 87 point 3to nil. Tho score included twenty tries, twelve of which were converted, and a goal from a free-kick.
Twelve thousand spectators watchedthe game, the Maoris giving a brilliant exhibition. Every man displayed individually and collectively perfect football science in all departments of tho Rugby game. They completely controlled play from the beginning to the end, their speed in attack and their rapid footwork baffling the Olympique players, whose defence was unable to cope with its opponents. Barclay, in the wing three-quarter position, and Shortland, at half, were particularly distinguished. Tho Olympiques, who were reinforced by several players from neighbouring clubs, appeared to lack training.
The score would have been heavier only the Maoris slowed down in the latter half.
