DEATH OF MAORI WAR VETERAN
(By Toleoraph.)
(Special to "The Evenino Post.")
AUCKLAND, This Day
A veteran of the Maori war, Tuim Tarahina, a Chatham Islander, died at tho Awakino Valley, Northern Wairoa, this week at the age of 102 years. He was born at the Chathams in 1824, and belonged to the Wesleyan denomination. Ho was a descendant of the Supreme Lord Eangihaua, who was the original owner of the islands. Tumi, who lived in Taranaki, enlisted with tho Imperial troops with fifteen others, and was engaged in many skirmishes against Titokowaru and Hau Hau. He was also in the fighting force against the murderers of the missionary and for tho protection of the surveying parties against surprise attacks. Ho was engaged against tfte notorious Te Kooti with a party which" surrounded that chief and called upon him to surrender. They found To Kooti very elusive and daring, and were never again able to get within shooting range of him. Tumi had lived in different parts of the north, and refused many offers to return to his island home.
