BAD EFFECTS OF A HOLIDAY.
1 Persistence on the part of Mr." E. W. Smith (Waimarino), in -addressing-Mr. Speaker as ""Mr. Chairman," •geatly, amused members of the House of- Representatives yesterday afternoon;- • He was allowed to transgress two or three times, but at last-Mr. Speaker called him to order.
"I desire to remind the hon. member that the Houso is not in Committee," said' Mr. Speaker. " •- -- Mr. Smith: "I hope I am not transgressing." Mr. Speaker: "You must refer to the Chair as Mr. Speaker." Mr. Smith: "I am sorry, sir..: I will endeavour not to offend again.. Now, Mr. Chairman—-" '■"':!
There were roars of laughter,--and^ once again Mr. Smith had to apologise. "I am afraid my compulsory Jioliday of three years from the House .has.had an effect on me," he said. .. ;. On several occasions during- the- remainder of Mr. Smith's speech there were further signs of the effects of his holiday, and the Houso enjoyed, oyery slip. . .....,;
