THE OLD CHURCH

L.E.W.

(To the Editor.)

g; rj _I n passing the old church in the Bolton Street Cemetery to-day I noticed that a portion of the iron on the roof had been ripped off, disclosing the shingles, and that some of the weather boarding at the western end had been removed. Does this mean that the building is at last to be renovated or demolished? Or that the iron is required for some other purpose? At the present time this old church, where so many of the present residents of Wellington were christened, and which to-day is referred to as "the old shed in the cemetery," is being used as a dumping place foi\ rotting grave fence posts and railings, and the gardener's wheelbarrow and tools. The windows are smashed, and the building falling into decay for the want of a few pounds for a cnat of paint, and a few panes of glass with wire netting protection. It lias been suggested to me. that the church may yet be utilised for a mortuary chapel for' the descendants of those already interred in the cemetery. I trust some abler pen than mine will protest against its demolition.—l am, etc.,
