A FEDERAL APPLE CONTROL BOARD.

Australian apple exporters, who Saw the New Zealand apple export treble itself last yoar, are looking for a further measure of control under the legislation to be passed by the Commonwealth Parliament.. But they are not unanimous about it, as there are existing State organisations, some of which are not keen to have a Commonwealth overlord, and it is a much more difficult thing to get State interests into line in the island-continent than It 13 to get provincial Interests into line In Now Zealand. The new Commonwealth Minister for Markets and Migration Is Mr. Paterson, who, beforo becoming a Minister, fathered the Paterson Plan, whereby the Australian butter-consumer pays an export bounty on butter. Recently he made the following statement:—As there is not yet sufficient ovidence that the majority of apple-growers throughout the Commonwealth deslre3 a system of control of oversea marketing, tha Federal Ministry does not intend to introduce legislation on the matter this session. The Federal Ministry is, however, very anxious to do everything possible to enable apple-growers throughout the Commonwealth to bring about an effective organisation of the export trade so that the best possible returns may be obtained for growers. As soon as there is clear indication that the majority of the producers are favourable to the plan now proposed, or any other proposal, the Ministry will consider again the whole position.
