ATHLETIC DEFEAT PETONE.

Over 1500 people witnessed the match between Petone arid Athletic on the Recreation Ground on Saturday. Athletic were without the services of Porter and H. B. Nicholls was a defection from the Petone ranks. The game itself was remarkable t'ov tlio evenness of the scores. In fact it was in the lap of the gods until a few minutes before the end. In the first spell, M'Kay pierced the Petone defence, to score in a good position, but Svenson's kick hit the cross-bar. Nicholls converted, making the half-time scores: Athletic 11, Petoue 11. Soon after the resumption, G. Nicholls mulled a kick, and Butterworth scored for Svenson .to goal. From a forward rush, King scored, and 31. Nicholls converted. Henwood was penalised for playing the ball on the ground, and Svenson goaled. M. Nieholls evened up the scores again with a penalty goal. Whinham snapped up in the loose and potted a goal, and with three minutes to go Warwick scored on the blind side, but Svenson's kick was short. Just on time M. Nicholls drop-kicked a goal from a penalty, making the final scores: Athletic 2G, Petone 22.
