SOUTHLAND'S GIFT TO AUCK&AWD, (By Telegraph.-rPress Association.) INVERCARGILL,'2nd August. " Southland is destined to be well remembered in Auckland Kugby circles in future, by virtue of the So-thland Shield, which shortly will be formally handed over' to the Auckland Rugby Football Union by the' Southland Amateur Sports Trust, which, came into existence recently as the result of a big art union conducted from this, pr.ovjnce about'a year ag£ Th« Auckland Province, made a splendid response •to .Southland's financial 5.0.5., but although"'many thousands of tickets were disposed-of there, little or none of the prize money- found its way go far Horth. The members of the trust, in which the art union funds are vested, have therefore; presented a shield in recognition of "tHe. valuable assistance accorded to the movement, and it is fitting that the trophy to' be presented to the Auckland Union; in ,the near future should be regarded as the most magnificent Rugby shield-in .the Dominion. No stipulations are made with regard to terms of competition^ the-donors being content to leave the deciding of this point to tha union itself.'". It' 'ia.;•" understood, however, that the shield ■ will be allocated for competition amorig/Vthe senior teams. The background of the shield is of oat 34in by 24in,-while the solid silver centrepiece, 30in.;byJ20in, is surrounded by 13 silver discs; vn -which the names of the various winners'will be inscribed. Oa the top panel of, the centrepiece the caption, "The. Southland Shield," is boldly, inscribed,• while on.the bottom panel the wording is,". "Presented to the Auckland Eugby Football Union by the Southland Amateur Sports Trust, 1925." In the centre is a representation in'relief of Rugby players in action, and this is surrounded by laurel wreaths. The general' decoration of the shield is hand-worked scroll relief da a hammered background.
