♦ MAN JUMPS PROM ATTIC DURING FIRE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WHAKATANE, This Day. The back portion of Canning's Tea Rooms caught fire at 10.30 last night, but the Fire Brigade quickly suppressed the outbreak, and thus saved a valuable block of shops from complete destruction. The premises are insured in the State Office. Ernest Macartney, a baker, who was sleeping upstairs, had a narrow escape. Partially overcome by smoke, he jumped from an attic window.
