AN UNATTRACTIVE GAME.

After a long series of misfortunes and defeats, Selwyn managed to obtain their first win of the season at Athletic Park by defeating Hutt by six points to nil. In spite of the many reverses they have suffered, Selwyn have taken the field each Saturday undaunted, and their victory was well deserved. Being at the bottom of the championship competition, the two teams were expected to provide an even and fairly interesting struggle. However), the game fell a long way snort of expectations, play being of a very poor order. The heavy state of "the turf was certainly against the players, but even allowing for tins, the display given was below senior .standard. Hutt were without the .services of .two of their regular men, and during the match a player on each side was injured, and had to be replaced. Hutt started off well enough, a strong forward rush carrying play to the opposition .twenty-five. Selwyn wero penalised, and Balks had a capital opportunity of opening up the Hutt scoring account. He failed, however, the ball going wide of tho posts. The Selwyn Vanguard then took a hand in attack, and forced Hutt back. A free-kick was awarded the Greens, ,and Leggatt was successful in landing a good goal. Selwyn 3, Hutt 0. For the remainder of the spell there was little incident in the play, which see-sawed up and down field. Although.. Hutt had not displayed a glimpse of the form which enabled them to defeat , Wellington, it was considered they "might brighten up' their game in the second half, and bring off a win. They failed their supporters, however, and play was a repetition of that, seen in the first half. The score remained unchanged until towards the end of the match, when W. Churchill dived over to score for Selwyn. There was no conversion, and the came ended: Selwyn (i, Hutt 0. Mr. D. Calciiiai was the referee.
