FISH PLENTIFUL, OYSTERS POOR

(By Telegraph.) (Special to the "Evening Pott.")

AUCKLAND, 2nd July.

With the exception of flounders, ■which this season are very scarce, fish are plentiful in Auckland. Snapper and tcrakilii are being trawled in large numbers, and supplies of crayfish from the Great Barrier, Mercury Bay, and Bay of Islands are showing large increases. The whitebait season opened yesterday, and it is expected that a good supply will come from the Waikato shortly. Frostfisii. which are very popular, are being obtained in fair numbers this season. A moderate supply of hapuku was recently obtained with hand lines in the vicinity of Throe Kings. Gurnard, trovalli, and kingfish are in good supply, but garfish, mackerel, moki, barracouta, butteriish, and hake are not so plentiful. . Much dissatisfaction is expressed at the smallness and quality of oysters. Most of them are said to be of such size as to make the work of the oyster openers extremely unprofitable. In a cluster of five, on the average only two oysters are worth opening, and these are generally of dark colour.
