CHAIRMAN OF COMMITTEES
The House of Representatives has inct to appoint its now Chairman of Committees, vice, Mr. J. A. Young, who has now been promoted to Ministerial rank. It is understood that the choice of the Reform Party at yesterday's caucus fell upon Mr. F. F. Hockly (Rotorua), who has been chairman of the Land Committeo of thoHouse for some years.
The salary attaching to the position of Chairman of Committees is £675, being next to that of tho Speaker (£900). Mr. Hockly was elected member for Rotorua in 1919, and has occupied that seat for the past seven years. A native of Orrell, near Liverpool, where ho was born in 18G5, he came to New Zealand in 1884 and immediately engaged in farming. He now has farms at Makuri (Forty-milo Bush) and at Hunterville. Ho has always been keenly interested in farmers' affairs, find on several occasions has boon a delegate to the AVellington Provincial and Dominion Conferences of the Farmers ' Union. For two years ho was a member of the Advisory Committee of the organisation. For some years he was a member and chairman of tho Kiwitea County Council. Mr. Hockly performed good work as president of the second Auckland District Military Service Board. Ho first contested a seat in Parliament in 1909, when he was defeated on the second ballot.
