TO-DAY'S PROCEEDINGS

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,

The Houso of Representatives met at 2.30 p.m.

Tho Prime' Minister gave notico, on behalf of the Minister of Labour, to move for leave to introduce the Oil in .Territorial Waters Bill. Sir George Hunter (Waipawa) gave notice of his intention to move that Mr. F. F. Hockley be appointed Chairman of Committees of tho House. The Attorney-General (the Hon. F. J. Rolleston) gave notice to move for leave to introduce the Police Offences Amendment Bill. The Minister of Lands (the Hon. A. D. M'Leod) gave similar notice in regard to the Industrial Societies Amondmcnt Bill. Mr. E. J. Howard (Christchurch South) is asking for a return showing the number of immigrants who have entered the Dominion during the last five years and the number who have settled in the North and South Islands respectively.

The Minister of Justice (the Hon. F. J. Rolleston) intends to ask for leave to introduce . the Evidence Amendment Bill. Mr. W. S. Glenn (Rangitikei) gave notice to ask tho Minister in Charge of Publicity whether he would take into consideration tho urgency of proTiding a special sum of money for advertising the Dominion in AustraliaMr. AY. E. Parry (Auckland Central) asked the Prime Minister a question in connection with tho relief of unemployment in Auckland,' and whether necessaries of life would bo provided whore required. Mr. Parry mentioned that there were a number of young girls unemployed in Auckland, and these could not pay tho rent for their rooms. Mr. Coates" replied tfiat th > social welfare committees of tho Hospital and Charitable Aid Boards dealt with the question of relief, and he was unable to interfere with their functions. In addition to the social welfare committees, other social workers had been asked to co-operate in the matter of supplying -assistance to those who might otherwise not desire to apply to tho Hospital Boards for relief. Hospital Boards had been asked to supply an estimate of their probable requirements. The matter of unemployment relief wasnot one wholly for tho Government to deal with. The Government could cooperate, with other bodies. Regarding i young girls out of employment in Auckland, he asked Mr. Parry to supply details. It was easy to make uso of generalities. Mr. Parry said that if there was only one such case it should be assisted. Mr. Coate3 replied that they did not want to make mountains out' of molehills. He would like particulars to be Supplied.
