The carving ' :on the lid represents a; double niahaia ,or bird-headed.figure, surrounding 'the .'sun god, Tane to Ra Nui, who guards• •the contents, and there are.two recum:bcht figures with Yprotrudhig tongues 'signifying defiance. The figures at each • ■end are typical of the old art heads .used for handles of treasure, boxes. The '^ :waka huia was carved from one piece ,of New Zealand totara, which had been ■in use as part of the structure-of-the ; Queen's YTharf, Wellington,- for: over ! sixty years. .' '•- .
