RIVER EROSION

The erosion of the Buller and-; Grey Rivers formed the subject of a question asked by the Leader of the' Oppoaitioh (Mr: H. E. Holland) of the Minister, of Public Works (the Hon. K. S. Williams)' in the House of Representative^,,yesterday afternoon. • ' , ',',-. .;, Mr. Holland said that the erosion., in the Grey River was serious, and acres' )£nd acres of land on the northern side were being washed away, .tho settlers being threatened with ruin. The process"wa;s fairly rapid, and only prompt action could save the situation., .There was Crown.lanii on the northern side of the river, whjch would justify the Government taking -action. The same thing was taking .place in the Buller River, and there was,,yery grave danger to the town of Westport- itself; the harbour and the O'Connor' Hoke were being threatened. In conjunction with the settlers at Greymouth; the people of Westport had. endeavoured'to"do something, but the problem was 'too great for them or the local bodies to stickle. He wanted to know whether the Government would take any steps--to -meet the danger. f . ■ -. ■-, .- .
