A BUS ROAD TO KARORI

(To the Editor.) ;' Sir,—lt appears to me that quick access to Karori could be obtained by means of: a bus service running from, Karori -via Kelburn, Glasgow street, Mount street, and Ghuznee street, to the G.P:o.','a'nd'from the G.P.O. via ,Bowen street;;--The-Terrace, Mount street, Glasgow Btreet, and. Kelburn to. Karori. Triis' round .Itrip; through the city streets would allow passengers to be siit down at the doors .of their places of business. This'-;'service would prove of great value to business people, many of whom are eVe'ii using cars for themselves and their friends, ~as no other reasonable service is available. These cars by the way stand. in;' ;.the streets all day and block the; thoroughfares. People would .be prepared to pay; a slightly higher fare for a fast, bus.aer-l vice, which could be tried out as.an ausijiary to the tram service. If;buses_ were found to be impracticable on this t\m' they could be taken off, with no;loss'to1 anyone, as buses are wanted iii • other - quarters. If buses .were, satisfactory" the*y might in course of time replace the'tram* service on this particular runjutbut • it. seems to me that both the tram"se,ryice; and a fast bus service are absolutely; necessary. ■ . . >--• .»?-- • ' The chief obstacle to running a i l)us,.ser-' vice to Karori is the steep road,:to Kel--burn, but this road could be greatly'nn-. proved if the following works cduld'b'e carried out: (1) Purchase the/unused tri-; angular-shaped piece of land from"-'Vie-, toria College at • the corner- of Sala&anca; road and Kelburn' parade; (2)r raise -the level of Salamanca road, which is:_t. pre-' sent almost flat, and increase'the,.grade' slightly, to allow Salamanca road toyjoin; Kelburn parade some' few feet above tlie' level of the present corner.', AlloY a wide, sweep at the corner to make visibility andgrade good; (3) ease the grade of .Kelburn'parade if possible. This might,be done by acquiring a strip of land from Victoria College to'allow a new rba'd'to be'formed between Salamanca road/and; Glasgow street, which would be ■5■ or 6feet above the present. road at the; tom, thus easing the grade. ; The University might receive a portion <)i the ,Town Belt as compensation; (4) acquire.pqrtiop of the Town Belt at. Kelburn parade Glasgow street junction; widen the-sweep round into Glasgow street, to. ma&OHe corner easy to negotiate..Some spoil would •• have to be cut out here, which'could be, used'for filling; (5) widen Glasgo^.street,: and ease the grade where possible. - ■'•'• ; : If authority . for access--to, Karori" has been granted the fund-Could; be immediately borrowed, and the:rwo»jk. proceeded with. This would utilise-.the' services of a lot of men who are .now^ur)-' employed, and would.be a permanent benefit to, the people of Karori and Kclbum.-^-.' I am, etc., ' ..' ..;'.,;. ', .
