NEW POULTRY STATION

WALLACEVILLE EXTENSION

PLAN TO IMPROVE BREED OF BIRDS.

The block of land owned by the Government at Wallaeeville, on which is located' the laboratory of tho Department of Agriculture, is 100 acres in extent, and there is plenty of room for extension of laboratory and experimental activities. Some time ago it-was planned to establish at Wallaeeville: (1) A dairying station, including a laboratory and model factory; (2) an experimental research and breeding station in connection with poultry. The former proposition appears to be ruled out by the Prime Minister's acceptance of Sir Prank Heath's report, but the latter stands, and an active start with the buildings should be made at an early date. The Public "Works Department ha 3 undertaken the constructional responsibility.

"With regard to the dairy produce laboratory and factory, the fact was recalled in the National Dairy Association's annual report (published on Saturday) that Sir. Prank Heath's report contained' "a strong recommendation that the dairying station should be placed in a district engaged in the butter and cheese industry. The Government has adopted the recommendation, and the Prime Minister has stated that immediate steps will be taken to give effect to it." The association's report adds that the Government is considering tho creating of a special branch of the Department of Agriculture, dealing solely with problems affecting tho dairy industry.

There is a dairying laboratory at Hawera, established and conducted by the Federation of South* Taranaki dairy factories, with- Government assistance, and it is doing, good work. Whether tho Government's projected dairying laboratory is placed with the projected new Agricultural College, or wherever it is placed, its location apparently will not be Wallaeeville. The experimental poultry station at Wallaeeville will sell at reasonable rates male birds of a typo approved by the Government and calculated to improve the egg-laying capacity of pri-vately-owned poultry yards. Besides helping breeding in this way, the Government will carry on the ordinary poultry business to a sufficient degree -to enable all tho practical problems of the business to bo met with and dealt with; and the benefits of practical research and. applied science will thus be made available for general information.

Poultry work comes under the activities of the Live Stock Division of the Department of Agriculture.
