THE CENSUS

FIGURES1 FOR COUNTIES.

Thirteen more population returns came to hand from' tho Government Statistician last night! Decreases shown in this return totalled 284, and (although the thirteen places included only' four counties), no less than 241 of the last population were lost from throe of the four counties—Pahiatua (loss 87), Kawhia (loss 107), and Ashley (Joss 47). It should be added, however, that the fourth county, Mongonui, shows an increase (374) that outnumbers tho total decrease (284) in the twelve other places. Mongonui County 'a figures are 3892 in 1921 and 4266 in 1926. But Mongonui did even better than that. Since the Census of 1921 tho town district of Kaitaia has been carved out of Mongonui County, and Kaitaia has now a population of 513, so the real increase 'within the 1914 boundaries of Mongonui County is 887. As regards boroughs, it will be noticed that the vicissitudes of Eastbourne have not prevented it from adding 425 to its population, and Baetihi and Hokiauga have also gone ahead.

The British Co-operative Holidays Ahsoeiation has passed a resolution urging upon local authorities the desirability of passing bylaws making the scattering of litter in public parks and open spaces a punishable offence.
