A BIG NIGHT
NORTHLAND TUNNEL REPORT COMPLETED.
It is not yet certain that the City Council will finally consider the estimates for the year at to-night's meeting, but some mention will be made of them, probably the sort of mention that extends over some hours. Already several preliminary discussions have taken place, and a further last-minute special meeting of the Works Committee i« being held this afternoon. The Mayor, in answer to a "Post" reporter to-day, said that the estimates had now been reduced to a form -which included all the works which could be carried out without raising the rates, but there were many other important items which could not be so provided for, and it was for the council to say what could be done. The very best had been done to include all the* more urgent works (and in. this connection he mentioned a road widening work long promised), but finances would not stretch indefinitely. Mr. Norwood also mentioned a proposal which had been made to group certain works, but which could not be undertaken under the estimates in their preient form, and to bring them before ratepayers as a loan proposal. ■ That aspect, and also the proposal that a special reserves works loan proposal should be brought forward, will no doubt be discussed to-night. The report of the Northland tunnel inquiry Commission is complete, and will be laid on the council table. In addition, it is understood, there are other contentious questions, and generally the prospects are of a big night. The appointments of the new Town Clerk and City Engineer will not be made this evening, as the Canadian applications are not to hand.
