NEVER EXTENDED

♦: STILL SCULLING CHAMPION

GOODSELL DEFEATS SAUL.

(United Press Association.—Copyright.) SYDNEY, 3rd May.

For the sculling race for the world's championship on tho Parramatta River this afternoon, thero was fine weather, but a southerly wind made the water choppy in places. Major Goodsell, the holder of the title, won the toss and chose the southern side of tho course. V.g had no difficulty in retaining the title.

From the start, Tom Saul, the challenger, took the lead, which was never

more than a length. Goodsell kept Saul ving, and passing Mortlake the latter tired and missed a stroke. Goodsell then went to the front and established a lead of two lengths. At a mile and a half, Goodsell had increased his advantage to four lengths, and at Cabarita was six lengths ahead. Saul's course was somewhat erratic. He made a spurt and decreased tho lead, but struck a rough patch. Goodsell clung to the southern bank, and after passing Abbotsford ran into smooth water, and went on to win easily by seven lengths. Ho finished quite fresh. Saul showed to advantage in the rough water, but never fully extended tho champion. Goodsell's time was 23min llsec.
