PSYGHOLOGIGAL TESTS

APPLICATION TO TEACHEES,

It is the opinion of Mr. R.,Darr'oeh (headmaster of the Terrace School) that the psychological tests in education are likely to have far-reaching remits as soon as < they are in general use and recognised as an essential part of the school' system. He considers it very necessary, however, that they be applied to the young teachers in the training colleges as well as to the children. --■•■■•.;■ : ■ "If the- tests are applied, to: teachers and the results examined in conjunction with the grading .of teachers," said Mr. Darroch in his report to the Terrace School Committee, "the brightest and most promising teachers will' then have an opportunity of rising to headships -of the! most important schools, at, least in their thirties. Many .c' the best.-teachers, in our- district were heads of their schools round about the age of thirty. I need only mention Mr. Firth, Mr. Grundy, Mr. Clement "Watson, Mr. W. H. Jackson, tho late Mr. Macmorran, and amongst the ladies, Miss M' Lean. Now it is seldom that a. teacher, is in the" highest position at thirty. I know .'of most brilliant young men, with the highest possible academic distinctions, very enthusiastic, capable, and successful, who will have to wait for years before they can possibly hope for headmastershi]j of a big school. In the meantime they may be'lost'to the teaching '■'■ profession. " The grading syatem was a wonderful improvement on the haphazard system of appointments which existed formerly, but Mr. Darroch said he thought that young teachers of "exceptional ability should be permitted to move ahead more quickly.
