MR. MURPHY AND SIR JAMES ALLEN.

It is understood th r a lively position has arisen as a result of the statement of Mr. Murphy, the Canadian Postmaster-General, on the position of the Pacific cable, and Sir James Allen's reply thereto cabled on Saturday. Mr. Murphy cabled back to London to the Canadian Commissioner, Mr. Larkln, with a request to seek an explanation from Sir James Allen, whose comments are N stated to have caused the strongest resentment in Ottawa.
