LOCAL CONTESTS

DECISIVE WINS IN SENIOR

GRADES

ATHLETIC AND PETONE

UNBEATEN

Athletic 25 Cerh.impore ... 9 Old Boys 23 Poneke 9 Oriental 25 Wellington 6 University 34 Htitt 3 Petone 48 Selwyn S Marist, a bye

For the local Rugby competition on Saturday afternoon the conditions were of good order, and much of the football was good,, a marked improvement being noticeable in the senior-A grade. Form on the opening Saturday was not to be taken as an accurate guide, the second series of matches resulting in the defeat of three of the winners on the first Jay, and leading only two teams unbeaten —Petone and Athletic. The last-named were opposed by Berhampore at Athletic Park, and although hard pressed for most of the first spell they were able to establish superiority by dashing play in the second spell. Berhampore's strength and vigour were not maintained, and Athletic won comfortably. A bright display also gave Old Boys a comfortable win over Poneke at Newtown Park. The play was keen and last, with Old Boys showing up in attractive passing bouts. Oriental vere too good for Wellington at Killjirnie, though the exhibition was nothing out of the way. Petone had a runaway, victory over Selwyn at Petone, and University disposed of Hutt in rather easy fashion at the Hutt Recreation Ground. Championship points are now as follow:—Petone, 4; Athletic, i; Old Boys, 2; Oriental, 2; Poneke, 2; Berhampcre, 2; University, 2; Marist, 2; Hutt, 0; Wellington, 0; Selwyn, 0. In the senior B matches keen and interesting play was the order. Porirua and Eastbourne won from Johnsonville and University respectively by small margins, while Training College easily accounted for Athletic.
