FIRE IN MAARAMA CRESCENT
GOOD "WORK BY THE BRIGADE,
On Saturday night a nine-roomed three-story dwelling in Maarama crescent, owned by Messrs. Dwan Bros., and occupied by Mrs. Grix was totally destroyed by fire. The central fire station received a call at half-past ten o'clock, and two engines were quickly on the scene. The brigade,' under Act-ing-Superintendent Clark, found on arrival that the fire had gained a strong hold, and notwithstanding most strenuous efforts the dwelling could not be saved. A house two doors away, owned and occupied by John J. Kilfoy, caught fire and one room was badly ■damaged. Another house, owned by Dwan Brothers, and occupied by John Joseph O'Connell, was slightly damaged. The brigade fought the fire for an hour and a half, and considering the situation and height of the residences adjacent to the building which was destroyed, splendid work was done in saving the neighbouring dwellings which were in danger through showers of sparks. Nothing was saved from Mrs. Grix's residence, and she and her daughter had to make their escape in night attire. Owing to the holidays; the insurants are not available.
