AT FEILDING

BRIGHT DAY WINS MANCHESTER HANDICAP SPRINT TO ORCHID. (By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post") FEILDING, 3rd April. The climatic conditions were very unfavourable for the opening day of the Feilding Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting, a bitterly cold wind making matters very unpleasant. This, however, did not prevent the public from attending in large numbers, as reflected in a totalisator turnover of £35,031, which was only £259 less than the amount handled last year. In their respective races Megalo and Pardon gave much trouble at the barrier, and in each instance were hopelessly left when the barrier rose. After winning the Ongo Hack on Royal Elm, young Potter was suspended for the rest of the day for using his whip in such a way as to cause his mount to interfere with other horses. KAWA KAWA HURDLES. On the strength of his good showing at the Napier Park Meeting, Wilmoreana was installed a big favourite for the Kawa Kawa Hurdles. Pendennis was a good second favourite. When the field was dispatched Matu, Wilmoreana, Pendennis, and Toa Taua comprised the leading division over the first Bix furlongs. The favourite, jumping badly, lost \his position, and Matu continued to lead until passed by Euchre, three furlongs from the winning post. Over the concluding stages Euchre went right away from his opponents to win easily, but Matu only just beat Slump, while Kouau and Pendennis did best of the others. Euchre showed good, form, but his task would have been more difficult had Pendennis , been well nandied. ONGO HACK HANDICAP. A number of promising hacks were saddled up for the Ongo Hack, the public making Dobbin a pronounced favourite, but there was plenty of support for Bomdeer, Benzora, and Star Shell. When the barrier rose Dobbin, Billikens, Bonideer, and Royal Land all began smartly, and there was little between the quartette over the first four furlongs, at which stage Eden Hall and Great Day also became prominent. Over the concluding stages Royal Elm and Benzora put in exceptionally good runs, which ended in Royal Elm beating Royal Land by half a length, with Benzora only a head further back, with Dobbin, Eden Hall, and Bonideer next. Dobbin had every chance, as Goldfinch got him out well, but it is obvious he does not stay well. By coming from a long way back Royal Elm's win was full of merit. MANCHESTER HANDICAP. A useful and even lot of handicap performers contested the' Manchester Handicap, for which event Martxilia was made a slightly better favourite than Vaward. Other horses well supported were Alaric, All Marimba, Euphonium, and The Lamb. All Marimba was the first to become prominent, and he was followed by Tho Lamb, Sanctuary, Vaward, and Alaric passing the stand. Racing into the back stretch The Lamb had taken charge from All' Marimba, Euphonium, Alaric, and Vaward. After passing the half-mile post Bright Day moved up, and racing into the straight there was little between AH Marimba, The Lamb, and Bright Day, but in the straight Bright Day ran on best, to beat All Marimba by a good half-length, with ' Imperial Spark three-parts i?f a length away. The Lamb was fourth and Martulla next. The winner raced very indifferently at the Rangitikei Meeting last week, and to-day looked very dry in the coat, factors that caused many bettors to discount his chance, but as Bright Day finished better than any of his opponents, there was merit in the win. All Marimba was pulled about a lot by his rider, and may have done better if allowed to stride along. Imperial Spark was finishing on, but The Lamb and Alarie will do better over shorter courses. MAIDEN STAKES. For the Maiden Stakes, Mister Gamp was installed a pronounced favourite, Coma and Memsahib being best backed of the remainder. Moonface began best, but Paitonu soon ran to the lead, and was followed by Moonface, Alarm, and Puawhato over most of the journey. Galloping strongly, Paitonu easily held his own in the final stages, to win easily by two lengths from Moonface, who defeated the fast-finishing Acred by a similar distance. Puawhato and Alarm were next to finish. The winner is one of the useful Bisogne breed, and, having size, should pay his way. Moonface ran a good race, while Alarm (fifth) may see a better day. TAONUI HANDICAP. ' The hacks that contested the Taonui Handicap were not a particularly good lot, the moderate Monaghan being made a good favourite from Bennanee, while New Moon and Bon March counted on most support of the remainder. From a good start Bennanee was first to break the line, leading Ohinemuri, Royal Mint, and Monaghan over the first two furlongs. Monaghan then assumed control, and he led Sovena, New Moon, and Ohinemuri into the straight. In the run to the fudge's box Monaghan tired, and Sovena hung on well enough to beat New Moon, with Monaghan an indifferent third, and Ohinemuri and Bennanee next. While the winner will never take a high place as a handicap performer, she has at least raced very consistently in her class. New Moon, who was making his second appearance during the afternoon, was unlucky not to secure a win. MANGAONE HANDICAP. Considering the counter attractions, the club were lucky to secure sprinters of the class of Orchid and Rational for the Mangaone Handicap. For this event Rational was installed a good favourite, but QuiUfire had a remarkably strong following. When the barrier rose Orchid, as Usual, hewn smartly, bu'; his rider allowed Gold Box to pass him, and retain the lead until, two furlongs from tlie winning post. Here Orchid again took chavfie, and won by a neck from Quillfire, with Rational two lengths further away, just in front of Lady Bentinck. The success of Orchid was in a measure due to excellent riding by B. Morris, while Quillfire was very unlucky, kh he lost a whining chance through running in at the critical stage. ONEPUHI WELTER. Rungi Siirto whs a pronounced favourite for the Onepuhi Welter, carrying nearly double the amount invested on I'anart. Kangi Sarto began well, and led passing the stand from Inoe and Rapid Fire. Racing up the back straight, Inoe led Rapid Fire, Asleep, Rangi Sarto, and Killoch. Four- furlongs from home Asleep took charge, and was just in front of Killoch turning i,,to tho straight. Over the last furlons Killoch ran on well to beat As'eep by half a length, with Rangi Sarto, Lady Anstruther, arid Kilmiss all close up. The winner is an improving mare and won decisively, but Rangi Sarto was a big disappointment. . . HALCOMBE WELTER. Tiega, Diogenes, and Glengariff were well supported in the betting on the Halenmbe Welter. When the tapes rose Tiega was actually first to begin/but Tonsototoa soon took charge, and over the first half-mile was followed by Glengariff, Tiega, and Attractive. Just before reaching tho straight, Glengariff went into the lead, and, ridden out, won by W 2 lengths, from Tiega, with Attractive, Tongototoa, and Road Hog next. Gleiißarifl: was always well placed, a remark that also applies to Tiega, but Road Hog and Attractive were each a trifle unlucky. Diogenes looked somewhat above himself, but the race will improve him. Results:— ' Kawaltuwn. Hack Hurdles, of 200 soys; about one mile and three-quarters.—s Euchre, 9.11 (M.
