.Another Jewish; breach of, promise case, in which Mr. Justice M'Cardie adjudicated, was responsible for further comments on tho commercialisation of modern engagements. The evidence revealed that in Jewish circles anybody introducing ( a young couple who subsequently married was entitled to commission, the extent of which depended on the financial situation of the married couple.
Mr. Justice M'Cardie, iv summing up, said that the ease east a vivid light on modern- social conditions and matrimonial ideals. They had an increasing bearing on tho family and the welfare of the nation. The law seemed , to disregard the spiritual, ethical, and sociological aspects of marriage,, and engagements were1- degraded to the statU3 of a mere commercial bargain. Juries were compelled to undertake the unfortunate task of! assessing a man's worth in the marriage ''market. He could not help thinking that the task was similar to those! of : assessors in Eastern slave markets.
