MESS IN LAMBTON QUAY

A SHOPKEEPER '8 COMPLAINT.

Lambton quay was flooded across its full width by the rain last night. The waters reached to the fronts of business premises from the Gear Company's sh ( op to the corner of Bowen street. Some of the cellars of buildings at the rear of the Government.Buildings wore invaded' by water, and a fairly long stretch of the wood-blocking on the western side of the Quay was raised. • "It is a remarkable thing, though not by any means novel/' complained a business man to a "Post" reporter to-day, "that the Corporation has very little interest in ■ keeping: storm water channels and sumps clear until after the rain is over. If you will think back you will remember that all those sudden downpours which have flooded collars and often done; serious damage to stock have.followed ju long dry spells. Sumps and channels become choked with rubbish, and because' the weather is fine why should the Corporation worry f Because , every street sump within a few blocks of my premises became blocked with sand and rubbish there were five inches of water in my shop last night, and there are two inches, of very nasty mud in it. this morning. Have I any claim against the Corporation for stock spoiled and inconvenience caused?, I certainly.have not. Have I a growl against the council? I certainly have." . . ,
