A GENERAL DOWNPOUR

HEAVY DOWNPOUR LAST NIGHT

FARMERS SMILE ONCE AGAIN.

Farmers in the Wellington district, and, iii fact, all over New Zealand, are smiling once more. The spell of "dry weather which has been experienced during the past few .weeks was broken yesterday by heavy,-rain, which was fairly general all over< the Dominion. Wellington came in for a good share of all the rain that was going, and in the past 24 hours 2.45 inches of rainfall were recorded.at the local observatory, of this no less than ,Bin fell between midnight and I,o'clock this morning. It was during this period that the wind changed round from the north to .the south. . ': ■. ' -8. ' According to reports received by the Dominion Meteorologist, Wairarapa, Hawkes Bay, Canterbury, and the North Auckland district (where the very dry. conditions have been the cause of much concern) have all shared i:. the beneficial.'rains, and returns to hand show that falls of rain were experienced as follows'in various parts of the Dominion:—Wanganui, lin; Westport, 1.54in; Foxtbn, 2in; Greymouth, 2.28in; Arthur's Pass, 2.92in; Collingwood, 3.16in; Masterton, l.Oiin. The centre of the disturbance which passed through Cook Strait during the night is now apparently located in the neighbourhood of the Chatham Islands. There are, however, indications of a secondary depression overlying the northern half of the North Island, and the prospects Bre for cold, cloudy, and unsettled weather,, with further heavy rain in many parts of the North Island, and the north-east districts of the South Island. Cold, changeable conditions, with scattered showers way be expected elsewhere in the South Island. . Strong westerly winds, backing to southerließ, are expected northward of Kawhia and the East Cape, * and south-easterlies thence to Hokitika and Lyttelton..Moderate to strong southerlies are likely elsewhere. ■ . .
