WITHIN A SECOND

CHRISTCHUECH, 22nd March. E. A. Eose failed by a second in his attempt to-night on the two-mile record of 9min 31sec., held by G. N. Hili,. of Auckland. He covered the journey in 9min 32see. At the athletic meeting, at which Eose appeared, the attendance was 4000, and every time the champion passed the stand he was. cheered lustily. Conceding long handicaps, he had to run the race virtually unpaced, otherwise he would certainly have broken the record. Rose did not appear in the mile race.
