' The Governor-General, Sir Charles Fergusson, and Lady Alice Fergusson were entertained at a conversazione at Tauranga Town Hall on Tuesday night, and yesterday morning they' visited places- of historical interest, including tho old military cemetery, the old mission station, and the site of the Gate Pa fight, as well as\]ocal schools tuhl the hospital. The children were granted a holiday in honour of the visit. At noon the party left for To Puke, arriving there at 1 o'clock on Tuesday for luncheon. They were tho guests of the Town Board, states a Press Association message. In the afternoon they visited the Agricultural and Pastoral Show, and then returned to Tauranga. Last evening His Excellency attended a meeting of Tauranga Masonic Lodge, and was to leave at 8.15 this morning for Whakatane.
Sir Bertram Maekennal, famous sculptor, is a passenger on the Otranto, says a Press Association cable from Perth. After spending a holiday in Australia he will proceed to New Zealand. '
"Gipsy" Smith, the evangelist, is a passenger on the Otranto, says a Press Association message from Perth. He visits New Zealand after a six months' mission in Australia.
The funeral of the late Mr. W. Hughes, secretary of the N.Z.P.S., Lta.j Hay ward's Pictures, Ltd., Fullers' Pictures, Ltd.,. and Australasian Films (N.Z.), Ltd., took place at the Taita Cemetery, Lower Hutt, yesterday. The Eev. E. Bowe officiated at the graveside, and Mr. W. B. Hardy read toe Masonic service. Messrs. A. M'Gowan (Australasian Films), . L. Quinn (United Artists) 1, E. ' Haddow (Empress Theatre), and A. Wainwright (N.Z.P.S., Ltd.), acted as pull-bearers. Among the many present at the funeral were Mr. E. J., Eighton, Sir Benjamin Fuller, and Mr. John Fuller (directors of the N.Z.P.S., Ltd.), Mr. W. T. Strand (Mayor), and Councillor M'Bain (representing the Lower Hutt Borough Council), Mr. C. 6. Wilson (president of the Wellington Cricket Association), Mr. B. S. Johnston: ( ex-secretary of the Wellngton Cricket Association), Mr. H. M'Girr and Mr. A. Aldersley (Hutt Cricket Club), Colonel Chesney (Hutt Golf Club), Mr. Oka Heketa (Hutt Maori Cricket Club), Mr. A. Davis, Mr. H. Bardsley, and Mr. T. Valois (Exhibitors' Alliance Films), Mr. B. Marsehel (Metro-Goldwyn), Mr. E. Hill (Universal), Mr. B. M. Stewart (Film Exchanges Association), Mr. H. Terry. (Famous Lasky), Mr. B. J. Young (Fox Films), Mr. B. A. Davison (First National), Mr. M. Balph (Beaumont Smith Films), Mr. H. Eighton and Mr. A. M'Glinchey (N.Z.P.S., Ltd.), Mr. H. Leen (Fullers, Ltd.), Mr. A. Hermann (Auckland Theatres, Ltd.), Messrs. A. Hodgson, W. Bowden, E. Stevens, and H. Pailthorpe (Australasian Films, Ltd.), E. Nathan (Empress Theatre Co.), H. W. Shortt (Shortt's Theatre), T. Craigie (Britannia Theatre), H. F. Wood (De Luxe, King's, and Queen's Theatres), D. Allen (Princess Theatre), G. Denby and 0. Fraser (King George Theatre, Lower Hutt), Barton Ginger, and T. Chapman.
