THE SLOOP CASSIOPEE
FRENCH WARSHIP OPEN FOR
INSPECTION
RETURNED SOLDIERS' VISIT.
Quite a number availed themselves of the opportunity provided yesterday of inspecting the French war sloop Cassiopee, berthed at the Clyde Quay Wharf. The vessel is thrown open for inspection from 1 o'clock to 5 p.m. each afternoon.
This morning at 9 o'clock Captain Decoux and some of the officers left on a motor trip from Upper Hutt to Waikanae. This evening Captain Decoux and officers dine with the French Consular Agent (Mr. O. E. Bendall), at the Wellington Club. To-morrow morning, Captain Decoux will return the French Consul's visit to . the Cassiopee. On Friday a luncheon will be given on the ship to members of the Cabinet On Saturday morning, accompanied by Mr. Bendall, two of ihe Cassiopee's senior officers leave by train for Auckland as guests of the Government, and will visit the Waitomo Caves en route.
The executive of the Wellington Returned Soldiers' Association paid an official visit to the ship yesterday afternoon, and were heartily welcomed by Captain Decoux. There were present: Mr. W. J. Pascoe, vice-president of the association, and Messrs. Cave, Nino mo,' Marshall, Stephenson, Maule, Egley, Freeman, and Brown. Mr. O. E. Bendall made the introductions. Mr. Pascoe, in apologising for the absence of Colonel G. T. Hall, president of the association, offered on behalf of the returned soldiers of Wellington a very hearty welcome to this city, to the captain, his officers, and crew. He recalled the old associations of the New Zealanders with, and their friendship for the gallant soldiers and sailors of France. Captain Decoux, in a feeling speech, expressed his personal esteem for the New Zealand troop 3, and the appreciation of France for the Now Zealand soldiers, assuring his hearers that this country would always remember the New Zealanders with friendship and gratitude. A very enjoy able hour was spent in reminiscences, and the toast of "La Belle France" was enthusiastically honoured.
