HUTT COUNTY

COUNCIL'S MONTHLY MEETING.

The monthly meeting of the Hutt County Council was held to-day, Councillor Hoggard presiding. The county engineer reported that the Day's Bay road was taken over from the contractor on Bth January, and maintained until Ist February, when the Suburban Highways Board took it over for the purpose of surfacing. Ordinary surface maintenance had been carried out in Wainui-o-mata riding, Day's Bay township, and the Lower Wainui Valley receiving principal attention. An additional man had been put on in York Bay cleaning up the scrub on the by-roads, and' another workman was being sent to attend to the Wainui road at Orongorongo. The contractors for Pukerua Bay roads were making a satisfactory job of the road down the cliff, and it was expected it would be completed in about a fortnight's time. Tenders had been received for Plimmerton pavilion, and that of Mr. Buckland had been accepted.

It was decided that a letter be sent to the clerk of the City and Suburban Highways Board drawing the attention of the board to the very bad state of the roads from the Lower Hutt bridge to the Taita Church, and from the Silverstream railway bridge northwards, ''

The York Bay Eatepayers' Association was granted permission to plant portions of the streets in York Bay with native trees, subject to the supervision of the county engineer. • ■«,

The following resolution was moved by Councillor Mulhern and adopted:— "That notice boards be erected at both ends of the Plimmerton township, stating the speed limit of 12 miles per hour."

It was decided to inform the Lower Hutt Borough Council that the improvements in the roads, together with the provision of a suitable ambulance, did not warrant the erection of a casualty hospital at-< Lower Hutt. ,
