A DEFINITE FAILURE

FLETTNER'S ROTOR SHIP

PUT UP FOR,AUCTION,-BUT NO/ BIDS.

(United Press Association—Copyright.) (Australian-New Zealand Cable Assn.) i BERLIN, Bth February. Flettner 'a rotor ship, the Buekau, has proved a definite failure. It was put up to auction, but did not elicit a bid.

The Flettner rotor ship was last year a nine days? wonder. It had two high revolving masts, 50 feet high and 15 feet in diameter, in appearance like two long cocoa tins with a projecting lid on top. These light hollow masts, made of thin sheet steel, revolved by electric motors at a speed .varying according to the wind. The principle was that discovered by, another German named Magnus, namely, that the resistance of approaching' side, in direction of revolution, to the wind, was much greater than the retiring side. The result was that the vessel tended to move ahead or astern according to the direction of the wind and the rotation. Experimental trials with the Buckau,' a converted schooner, seemed to promise success, but a trip across the North Sea from Hamburg to Leith did not display a satisfactory practical performance. After that, until the present news, little or nothing was heard of the rotor ship.
