THE LAND AND SEA SERPENT
The latest sea serpent story comes from Australia, says a correspondent of the ''Manchester Guardian." Side by side with a log-book entry of the French str>rner St. Francis Xayier mentioning that a sea serpent 60ft long had been sighted off the coast of New South Wales, there ia "news" of remarkable happenings . among the swamps just inland in the same neighbourhood. Fanners living among these swamps were puzzled at the frequent disappearance of their cattle and the smashing of their fences. It was assumed that thieves had killed the cattle and taken them away by boat. And yet search revealed no tracks of either men or horses, only a curious wide furrow leading to the beach. Then one night a boy was wakened by dogs barking and went out with his gun, also arousing some farm hands. What the lad saw was "a great dark object, resembling a huge snake, travelling across fences and paddocks at a terrific rate. Its head was held high in the air, and in its motith was a struggling calf." Its trail was followed to the beach, and the creature was seen to enter the water. It seems a good example of the tall story, concludes tfes corrwpondeafc
