HOLIDAY MEETINGS

AT AWAPUNI

GRAND KNIGHT AGAIN

KILPEEON BEATS JUVENILES,

(By Talnraph.) (From "Vedette.")

The Manawatu Summer Meeting was concluded in warm . and seasonable weather, the crowd showing a falling off, which could onlv be expected, for many of the business premises had reopened. Speculation was again' very free, however, the increase for the day being £270 and the total increase £17,579. j The racing was again very keen and provided very close finishes, which sorely tried the judge, Mr. J. Gage Williams. 'That official was subjected to a very hostile demonstration after the last race. It ha« to be pointed out that no one can view a finish from the judge's line at Awapvrai, but on the moßt favourable vantage point one or more of hi« decisions seemed open to question during the three days. Whether the demonstration at the last was for, his work in general or for the decision in the last race is hot known. If for the last- race, no one: but' the judge could decide whether Master O'Rorke on the outside rails had won or riot, for nobody could take a line, hence the noise, was unjustified. ... . . 'frentham stables provided winners in Grand Knight and Kilperon,.both of ■whom won well. A feature of the day was the success of E. E. Connop's appreiitice, N.Trillo, who won three out of the last four races,, on. The Bolter. Khon, and Birkie. B. H. Morris was again riding • moe't consistently, his six mounts providing one .first, two seconds, and one third. ' Mr. W. Price "has improved his Btarting, and although he is still a little slow he effected some very fair. dispatches. TIRITEA HURDLES. . Bonnjk Kill was a' slightly better favourite than Waibeka Jack and Eohmark, Slump' being only moderately well supported. Waioeba Jack went out to make the pace from Slump, The Emperor, Eonmark, and Bonny Rill. The Eiuperoß fell, at the second fence, and AVaioeka Jack, had about ten . lengths lead. from Bonhiy Rill going down the etraighCthe remainder following in close order. Waioeka Jack held,, his advantage 1 all the way down the back, Bonny Rill and Slump being his nearest attendants at the turn. Vaioeka Jack in the: lend won :by five lengths tfrbm Slump with 'Comedy Prince half a length away third. Eonmark and Bonny Rill'were next. j" , '.'. ; ' Waioeka" Jack gave a magnificent display of jumping at all except the stand flight, at which he got in a little too close. iile .stayed out the \ mile and tliree-qua::'ters better than expected. Slump was easily second, but P. M'Brearty on him cut matters fine, and Comedy I*rihce almost caught' him. Eonmark could not handle the going, and Bonny Rill faded out. .over the. last furlong. The, Emperor broke a leg and was! de~ • strpyssi.. ; ;.,., „,-„..„,,,..,, ...„,'.' >.:..;;..'; : " whit more Handicap. Nine of Spades was a decided favourite with Blonds-just a little better .lacked than,Constellation. Nine' of Spatles began best from Blonde andPurple Lilac,, Bon "March being slow away. Bon s ]Maich. made up her ground down' the back, and at the turn was handy to Nine of Spades and Blonde. The last-named 'had Nine of Spades in trouble when it came to racing home, 'and Bon. March also gathered-in Nine of Spades. At the end Blonde won by three-quarters of a length from Bon March with Nine of Spades a length and a half away, Purple Lilac fourth, and Constellation next. ' Blonde • won very nicely, but if the rider of Bon March had had a whip or even had been more fortunate at the barrier, she would have won. Nine of. Spades was fairly beaten, and no doubt was feeling his two hard races earlier. Constellation was never . prominent. _ JUVENILE HANDICAP. •Spode, wound up a slightly better favourite than Alyson, with' plenty of mbriey for Kilperon and Standard. After one'false ftait and.the tapes had been broken, Kilperon led out* from Standard; Pangolin, Tannadice, and Alyson. Limerick's rider was caught by the barrier, and Pinthair was slow to move. Kilperon, Standard, and Pangolin were just showing the way to Tannadice, Alyson. and Henna at the turn, but once in line for home Kilperon and Standard drew away to fight out a great finish, Kilperon' winning by a nose. Alyson •was three lengths away third, and then close up caine Tannadice, Pangolin, Limerick,'and Henna. Kilperon stuck to his work in great style, for Standard appeared to head him just before reaching the post, but the two-year-old came again with, great courage. It was his best effort since winning at Wanganui. Standard ran his best race since he finished third to Motley .and Tamntete. Aly«on was a little unlucky, '. and Tannadice ran green in the Btrajght,. bijt with a strong horseman up. at Tauherenikati will take all kindte of beating. Pangolin ran » very fair race,, but Limerick .finished surprisingly- well from a hopeless position at the start. ■ . He cannot for long be off the winning list. LIVERPOOL HANDICAP. , Grand Knight was the hottest fa\-our-ite of the meeting, with Tanadees, Good Sport, and Kilceit all well backed. Imperial Spark led out from Grand Knight, ''Tanadees, Bumptious, and Kilceit, but Grand Knight soon took the lead, and showed the way down the back to Imperial Spark, Tanadees, Kilceit, aiid Good Sports There 'was little change to the turn, and at the end Grand Knight won.very-*comfortably by three-quarters of a - length- from Taimdees, with Imperial Spari. a nose away third'. Kilceit was a liood fourth, and Bumptious next. ..''..■

Grand Knight owed his success in some meisure to B. H.. ..Morris,'-, who went to: the front early, and slowed the race down to hulf-pe.ee. Speed.•was/turned oh half a mile from home, but then Grand Knight had it well on the opposition'for pace. Imperial Spark went one of- his best races, but had no chance with the English horse. ■ Tanadees'.finished on well, and must have just beat Imperial Spark on the post. Kilceit was a- good fourth, and Bumptious finished, well after receiving'a bad-passage all the way. \9estbury handicap.

Bright Knight, Minotus, and The Bolter were fairly evenly backed, with good support for Westbroke. The Bolter and Westbroke, wide out, began/ best, and led to the top turn from Lin Arlington and Paddon. The Bolter had a break of at least six lengths on Westbroke at the end of two furlongs, with Lin Arlington, lllingar, and Lampyre next, and Minotus well back. Westbroke went in pursuit of The Bolter in the straight, but failed to reach him by three-quarters of jj length. Lampyre was four lengths away third, and Minot (is, Star Chamber, Liu Arlington, and Cherry Pie were next. Tho Boltrr was stopping at every ■tride, but his eirly brilliancy gained •

sufficient advantage for him to win. He started from No. U at the barrier and Weetbroke'from No. 15, thus enhancing the merit of the performance. Lampyre finished well, and Minotus put up a good performance to finish fourth. : Bright Knight was never prominent. Star ' Chamber showed a bit of speed, and might win a minor race soon. CLANDEBOYE HANDICAP. Martulla was a very firm favourite, with Rouex the only other 1 backed to any extent, Pinou being only third in request. Martulla, Rouex, and Beaumont were first out,, but Pinon led into the back straight, with Zero Hour and Beaumont next, and Rouex and Martulla at the head of the others. There wu not a great deal of change to the turn, where Martulla camo through and went in pursuit of Pinon. The Tatter ■■ stayed on to win by half a length from Martulla, with Polyphemus a length and a half away third, and Rouex, Son o' Mine, and Zero Hour next. It was rather a rough race, Martulla and Rouex both being in a good deal of trouble, Rouex in particular. Pinon, on the contrary, was always well out in front, but nevertheless he ran an excellent race. Martulla finished on very gamely, but the buffeting about she received cost her the race. Polyphemus, being tried over a distance of ground, ran on surprisingly well, and might possibly be a likely Douro Cup candidate. Rouex was in all the trouble going. Scotch Mixture and Highway were never in the bunt. . CHRISTMAS WELTER. In a good betting race, Mangatoetoe w.ia a slightly better favourite than Cat Call, The Tank, Black Mint, Tongatotoa, , and Newbury Kiii£ all having plenty 1 of supporters. Equalise, Tongatotoa, Newbury King, Black Mint, and Cat Call comprised the leading division down the back straight, but Equalise soon dropped out, having broken a blood vessel. Tongatotoa led Newbury King, Black Mint, Cat Call, The Tank, and Mangatoetoe at the turn, but the last two ran wide. Cat Call and Newburv King challenged in the straight, Tongatotoa, bowever, having too much in reserve, and winning easily by-two lengths from New r , bury.King. Cat Call was a head away third, and Black Mint' and Sanctuary next, ahead of Mangatoetoe and The Tank. ■Toiißatotoa won without any-trouble, and it obviously a much improved gelding. • Newbury King 'was going- on well. jn second place, ■ fairljr outstaying Cat 1 Call, who began slowly. < ; -Black Mint ' went a really good ,race, at, the turn ■ looking. a possibility. Mangatoetoe, who wu a much expected candidate, almost ran off .the course at the turn. The Tank was unlucky in the running, but should soon make amends. Sanctuary again ran a fair race. v KAWAU HANDICAP. > Economist wound up - favourite in a great betting race, Ilka being a decided second choice. Ilka began very smartly, ■ and soon opened up a good break from ' Birkie, Birthmark,' and Piquant. Ilka had come back to her field at the turn, where . Birkie, Piquant, and Economist were next. Master O Rorke ran wide at the turn, and went up the straight near ; the outside rails. After a great ."finish, ■ the- judge-plaoad Birkie first,- Economist second, Birthmark third, and Master O'Rorke fourth. The decision was • doubtful one. Birkie went a.great race, and-hung on , well, but certainly it appeared as if Economist had his measure by a good margin. Master O'Rorke, wide out, it was difficult to place from anywhere but on the judge s actual line. Birthmark ran a surprisingly good race into third place. Ilka stopped badly at the end, for in the middle stages she ap•peared to have a lead which assured victory. Master O'Rorke was decidedly unlucky, for had he been steered a,straight course he would have won. Miss Hupari'a and Piquant faded out badly.
