UNIVERSITY DEBATES

TO TB> SBIfOR,

Sir,—Will you allow me to express appreciation both of your sub-leader regarding the forthcoming world tour by university debaters, and of the timely action by the Victoria College Debating Society in inviting public suggestions for subjects to be debated with the visitors i I should like also to suggest one or two subjects for consideration. In this iionncction might I say that the type of subject which the local university students have been debating in recent years—l a;n sorry their debate* afe not more fully and more; regularly reported in the' Press— could scarcely-be improved ujtod :— My suggestions arc:—

(lj "Whether the Versailles Peace Treaty, in so far an it is based on-the charge o£ Germany's responsibility for Iliß Ureat War, should be 'scrapped.' " Th ib, of course, involves a trt-ofold argument us to the origin of the war aittl as to the possibility of revising the Treaty, on both of which points the vast accumulation of largely-conflicting evidence could be siftfed iiud suininarißed with advantage to the students and their itudieuce.

(2) "Looking to the 'Next War,' would it be arguable whether university students of the World should pledge themselves in advance to atl attitude of uncompromising pacifism?" This has lately been the subject of some controversy in students' conferences in other countries.

(3) "That the entry of women into pro. fessional and public life is to be deplored."

(i) "That Dominion restrictions on Asiatic immigration which affect British subjects are to be condemned as incompatible with our obligations to the Empire."

I trust that any other: readers who ate looking? forward to the projected ilebates will supplement this little list nrtih their suggestions.—l atnj etc., FABIAN. 26th December.
