BY WAR MEMORIAL COMMITTEE

The offer of tht Wellington Carillon Society to supply a grand carillon, unconditionally, as an adjunct to the Wellington Citiiem' Memorial, has been rejected by the Wellington Citizens' War Memorial Committee.

The announcement was mads at s meeting of the committee of the Wellington Carillon Society held in the Town Hall yesterday afternoon, when the following letter^ dated the 9th instant, was read from Major J. T. Watson, hon. secratary of the War Memorial Committee: —

"I am in receipt of your communication of 3rd December, and bej; to thank' you for the same. At a meeting of tho Executive Committee of the Wellington Citizens' War Memorial held last eveniiig the subject matter contained in your letter was fully discussed, and it was finally resolved: 'That the Wellington Citizens' War Memorial Fund having been collected on the distinct understanding that it was to be expended on the erection of a strictly symbolical memorial, this committee regrets being unable tp accept the offer of the Carillon Society, but dejires to express its appreciation of the same. I would be glad if this decision could be conveyed to your committee.' " ' . ' On the motion of the chairman (Mr. H. p. Bennett), the letter was formally received.

A letter was read from Mr. L. P. Blun-, dell accepting the position of patron of the society. "The honour is one which I. sincerely appreciate," wrote Mr. Blundell. "I have been keenly interested in the aims of the society, and shall be pleased to assist in furthering the objects it has in view. Will you please convey to the members of your committee my thanks for electine: me patron." The following officers were then elected: —President, Sir Harold Beauchamp,; vice-presidents, Messrs. Sidney Kirkcaldie, Hope Gibbons, George Shirtcliffe, L. O. H. Tripp, and J. MT Geddes; hon. solicitor, Mr. A. E. 0. Jones; hon. treasurer of the society, Mr. E. G. Pilcher; hon. treasurer of the Carillon Fund, the City Treasurer; hon. auditor, Mr. H. E. Graves; chairman of. the committee, Mr. H. D. Bennett; bankers, the Bank of New Zealand. Mr. Jones submitted a draft of the constitution of the society, and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his services. It was decided to circulate copies to members of the committee, and consider the same tt next meeting of the committee. A Urge number of citizens were elected members of the society, and it was decided to enrol as many members as possible, the chairman and the actingsecretary (Mr. Jenkins) being authorised to print enrolment forms. A letter was received from the Wellington North Ratepayers' Association appointing Messrs. E. G. Pilcher and H. Philpqtts-Crowther as delegates on the committee. It was resolved to write to all ratepayers' associations and musical societies asking them to appoint one or two representatives on the committee. Messrs. G. Mitchell, E. E. Muir, and D. J.
