WELLINGTON AUTOMOBILE CLUB
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
The annual meeting of the Wellington Automobile Club was held in tbo Assembly Hall of Uic Dominion Farmers' Institute last night. The chairman (Mr. S. G. Nathan) presided. The attendance numbered about fifty. The chairman stated that the work of the new organiser (Mr. E. C. Kobison) had resulted in a very satisfactory increase of membership, from 577 at the time of his appointment to 1201 at the present day. Branches had been opened through the agency of the organiser at Palmcrston North and elsewhere in the Manawatu with promising results. The chairman mentioned some of the beneficial reforms achieved by the activities of the club. The balance-sheet showed a very healthy balance of over £1300. The chairman moved the adoption of the report and balance-sheet (already published). This was seconded by Mr. Goldberg, and carried unanimously.
It was announced that 72 new members had been elected. Tho election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Sir Joseph Ward; auditor, Mr. W. S. Wheeler (re-elect-ed) ; secretary and treasurer, Mr. H. J. Stott (re-elected); executive committee, Dr. Graham llobertson and Messrs. H. Filmer, F. Holdsworth, F. W. Manton, C. A. L. Treadwell, A. L. Warburton, R, W. M'Villy, A. J. Curtis, H. W.'Shortt, and F. Goldberg.
The chairman moved in accordance with notice that the name of the Wellington Automobile Club be altered to Wellington Automobile Association. In answer to a question, the chairman said that there was a North Island Motor Union and a. South Island Motor Union but no Dominion Association. The chairman added that practically all the motor bodies were associations.
The question was raised by Mr. A. W. Purtou as to tho use of the word "automobile." They were a British community, and did not need to use American terms.
Mr. 11. Filmer suggested organisation on the lines of tho Australian clubs, which had associate country members. The time was approaching when the city could support a firstclass automobile club with decent clubrooms.
After further discussion, the chair man withdrew his motion.
'Mr. F. Goldberg moved.a, vote of appreciation to Mr. A. N. Field for his services as a couimitteeman and as the compiler and author of the club's year book. This was seconded by Mr. Filmer, and carried with hearty acc.lamn.tiuu, and ordered to be recorded on the minutes. Mr. K. Leslie Jones spoke urging the club to support the activities of ratepayers' association for the securing of bettor roads. - This particularly applied to Queen's drive, Lyall Bay. A similar request was made in regard to Shannon street and Pallisciroad, Oriental Bay. Mr. Jones urged particular attention to lighting at the south end of the Basin Eescrve and on Cambridge terrace. Better lighting was also requested for the Evans Bay road. The chairman paid a tribute to the courtesy and attention of the Hutt Koad Board to the interests of the motorists. He hoped that no motorist would complain about paying the Hutt road fee. Mr. Goldberg moved that a letter of thanks be sent to the City Council to express appreciation of the club for the attention and courtesy of the council to the club's requests.
The motion was carried unanimous
A hearty vote of thanks was carried to the retiring chairman (Mr. S. G. Nathan) for his services in the past.
