SOME INTERESTING FEATURES

There are 194 candidates for the 7(5 European* scats at tho forthcoming General Election, as compared with 107 in 1922. For tho four Maori seats in tho House of Representatives there arc thirteen contestants.

The following table affords an interesting comparison with 1022 as to the numbers of candidates in tho field for the European scats in tho various party interests:—

There are three official Reform nominees for-the Native seats, tu-o uiioffic.iat'.R'eFdrniers, ono Nationalist, two supporters of Labour, ono Liberal, and four Independents.

It is bE interest to note from the. list of candidates published on page 7 that thcro will be 39 straight-out contests —14 between'.Reform 1 and Labour, 15 between Reform and Nationalist Party, 6 between Nationalists and Labour, one between Reform and an Independent, and one between Labour and an Independent Liberal. There will bo triangular contests in no less than 31 electorates, as compared with 28 in the 1922, while in five cases there will be four-cornered contests, and in Bay of Islands there are- five candidates contesting the seat. Reformers, Nationalists, and Labour are opposed to one- another in triangular fights in 23 constituencies. As previously pointed out, in ono electorate (Bay of Plenty) there will l>n _np poll, Mr. K. Sitting members will contest 70 of lljo. .0 arnis. Those who have retired are the Hon. D. 11. Guthric (Reform. Oroua), the Hon. J. A. Hauan (Nationalist, Invcrcargill), the Hon. Sir R. Heaton Rhodes (Reform, Ellesmcre), Mr. L. M. Isitt (Independent, Ohristchurch North), Mr. G. Witty (Independent, Riccarton), ancT Mr. j. 0. Thomson (Nationalist, . Wallace). Pourteen members of' previous Parliaments are seeking election, ineliuliiiff the Eight Hoii. Sir Joseph Ward, exJjiborai Primp Minister, and Messrs H. G. Ell and B. P. Lee, ex-Ministers. Miss Ellen Melville (Reform, Grey Lynn) is the only lady candidate at tins election. Three years ago there v.-erc thrco lady aspirants, but they obtained comparatively poor support.
