TROUBLE ON THE MAKO
SEAMEN REFUSE TO PROCEED
TO SEA,
(BI TELEOR.irn.— PRESS ASSOCIATION.)
NAPIER, 25th October
Trouble was experienced with the firemen of Richardson and Co.'s Mako during tho week-end. On Friday night tho men refused to take the vessel to sea owing to a member of the crew not being financial with the union. Another hand was engaged, but still the men refused duty, con ; tending that "lie could not be signed on after 5 p.m.- On Saturday, however, the men decided to return to duty, but the vessel, as she was leaving her Ijcrthage, twisted her rudder agr.iust the wharf. An examination was made by a diver, and repairs effected to tho satisfaction of the inspector of machinery, but the men again refused duty, contending that tho vessel was unseaworthy. They renewed their decision yesterday morning, and the vessel proceeded on to Auckland under the escort of the Tangaroa. The latter vessel returned to port three hours later, as the captain considered the Mako quite safe, and the escort not further needed.
