PERFECT TENNIS
AUSTRALIANS' GREAT EXHIBITION. . (AUSTRALIAN-NEW ZEALAND CABLE ASSOCIATION;) (Received 28th August, 2.30 p.m.) CHESTNUT HILL, 27th August. Patterson and Hawkes gave a great exhibition of perfect tennis against Johnston and Griffin, winning the match in straight sets in 55 minutes. In the first set the games were 5-4 with the service, but Johnston then lost the tenth game. Patterson gave a wonderful exhibition from start to finish. Hawkes was also different from yesterday, and also played perfect tennis. He withstood a consistent, and pre-arranged attack splendidly, making but few mistakes. Patterson won every service for 34 points in eight games, against 8 points,- including 4 to love.' Patterson's service was quite impregnable, and Johnston was unable to touch them.. Hawkes also developed a new and effective serve, and won every one. Johnston was given very few opportunities to. bring off his famous forehand drive. Patterson's smashing forehand driving was consistent and quite unplayable, while Hawkes was very safo with low volleying. There was a large attendance and the weather during the match was perfect.
