PACIFIC FREIGHTS CUT.

The American correspondent of the "Commercial News and Snipping List," Sydney, reports reduction in freight, rates by sieumtdiip companies operating out ol New York to Australia and Now Zealand, in order to meet' Montreal competition. This has caused something of a Hurry among the Pacific lines operating Australian services, although thoic has not been any indication so far that the low rates quoted out of Montreal and New York havo attracted any great volume of traffic, it any, away from the Pacific route. Tlie Atlantic lines, it is understood, havo suggested that the officials of the Pacific linos use their influence with" tho Canadian Government Merchant Marine and the New Zealand lino operating out of Montreal to restore, the rates to the former level, inasmuch as the present tariff precludes tho possibility of any profit. The principal cojicern of the New York linos is tha'V the Canadian lines have been bidding for business from the American side of the border, especially in tho Chicago and Detroit districts. On motor-cars, it is learned, the Montreal lines offered a rate of 1.50 dollars below the prevailing ta-riff. This has been met by the New York lines, as havo tho cuts on other cargo.
