EARLY ENGINEERING CONTRACTS

Some of tho oarly engineering contracts carried out in the manufacture of locomotives were recalled by Sir John Luke (Wellington North) in the House of Bepresentatives yesterday. In the early 'seventies, he said, he himself assisted in tho building of four engines at Messrs. E. W. Mills and Co.'s foundry for the Sandon tramway. The people of that day were prepared to encourage the engineering industry, and many young people who received training in the New Zealand foundries in those days had risen to eminence in their profession in after years. Sir John men-' tioned that one of the greatest steel shops in tho world was.in charge of a man who served his time at Messrs. Price's foundry at the Thames.
