HANDLING COAL
FLUME USED AT WESTPORTSTOCKTON.
(BT TBLEQnAPH.—^PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WESTPOBT, 17th August,
The Westport-Stockton Coal Company had a -successful trial on . Saturday of its flume for the conveyance by water over a distance of 5j miles of coal from the mountain top to the railway line. Everything worked well, 65 tons of coal traversing the full distance in 36 minutes and arriving %t its destination without any apparent damage. While several other mines are worked on this principle, Westport-Stockton's is on tho largest scale yet attempted in the Dominion, and the -success attending this work is regarded as likely to have a big effect on the transport of coal from all the other mines worked under the present gravitation conditions. So far as Stockton -is concerned; it will cut down considerably the transport costs, as well as allow of greater production, the fluming displacing the costly electric motor" work at present in use.
