WELLINGTON 11, NELSON 8

Although not producing footbiall of quite bo high a standard as the other match, Wellington and Nelson Colleges provided a, good fast game, in which the evenness of the play and- of tha scores kept their supporters excitedly interested right through to the final whistle.

The two teams were very, evenly matched, both showing up better in the forwards than in the backs. The Nelson backs wei'e a little surer and sounder than were their opponents, and similarly the Wellington forwards showed better combination, especially in the loose rushes, than did the opposing pack. Play was fast the whole spell, with neither team holding any advantage. The only score was a try to M. C. Smith, who dribbled the ball over the line after his backs had- brought play upfield in a nice passing rush. Half-time caihe with Nelson College leading 3 to nil. Wellington immediately attacked on resumption of play, and, before long, Darroch touched down, after the forwards had carried the ball over the line. The Wellington forwards were nou' monopolising the play, and j n great rushes were carrying everything before them. From a line-out, Bamson received . and dropped across. 6-3. This livened Nelson up, and play Tvas removed to midfield, where Rutherford, the brilliant Nelson centre-three-quarter, received, and swerved and dodged right through the defence, to score under, the posts. He also converted the try, and Nelson led 8-6. The rest of the game was Wellington's, however, and after the forwards had gradually worked the play to within striking distance, :Aitcheson made a fine opening, before passing, on the line, to Carlson, who had only to drop .across. Carlson converted and made the final score Wellington College 11, Nelson College '8. Mr. J. S. King was referee.
