HAWKES BAY SUPERIOR TO
SOUTHLAND,
(IT TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.)
NAPIER, 9th August. Th« Hawkes Bay Rugby representatives on Saturday played the . third match of the season in defence of the Ranfurly Shield, which they retained, beating Southland, the challengers, by 31 points to 12. The weather was windy and cold. A heavy ahower fell shortly before the match started, but the wind dried the ground considerably. The defenders kicked off against the wind and within five ' minutes Southland had drawn . blood. They worried Hawkea Bay all through the first spell,_ which ended with the scores: Southland 12, Hawkes Bay 8. It'was quite a different story in the second spell, however, when both sun and wind handicapped the visitors. The Hawkes Bay forwards put up a great performance, and Southland were seldom . permitted to become dangerous. The Southland forwards returned to the. attack on several occasions, but- lacked the necessary finish ,and the proper support of their backs. When " no-side " was finally blown the score stood in favour of Hawkes Bay by 31 points to 12. For the winners tries were scored by Gemmell (2), Corkill, Grenside, Blake, Walker, Falwasser, M. Brownlie, and Kirkpatrick; while Irvine converted two oi the tries scored. For Southland', tries were scored by Hazlett and Ottrey, while Kilby converted one try and potted a goal. In the second spell Kivell was unable to take the field at fullback for Hawkes Bay, owing to injury, and his place was taken by Yates. Mr. Meredith (Auckland) was the referee.
