CANTERBURY'S SHIELD

WELLINGTON DEFEATED IN FINAL.

The final game in the Hockey Shield tournament was played at Karori Park this morning, and resulted in Canterbury beating Wellington A by 3 goals to 1. In the opening stages of the game, Canterbury were constantly in their opponents' circle, and finally Quartermain, from a good pass by Mahoney, netted. Canterbury 1, Wellington o.' WeJ lington broke away several times, but lacked finish in circle work, and Canterbury, with Hore and Mahoney showing up well, kept them on the- defensive. There was no alteration to the score at half-time. After the resumption, Wellington attacked strongly, W. Hood just missing a score. Ford (Canterbury) cleared to Mahoney, who gave Quartermain another chance, which was successful. Canterbury 2, Wellington 0. Obstruction by Snooks gave Wellington a goal from a penalty bully with Lusty. Canterbury 2, Wellington 1. Subsequent play gave Canterbury the advantage, and W. Bell sent in a beautiful shot to the net. Canterbury 3, Wellington 1. Wellington were unsuccessful in further attacks, and the game ended with the scores unaltered. The game was featured by a great number of penalties, Canterbury being the more serious offenders.

Messrs. Gracie and Hatch were the referees.

The Australian hockey players, who have been touring the Dominion and who were engaged in a Test game with New Zealand at the Basin Reserve this afternoon, were accorded a civic reception in the Council Room, Town Hall, yesterday afternoon by the Mayor (Mr. C. B. Norwood).
