TOO MUCH NO-CONFIDENCE
Dissatisfaction witH the explanation of the Minister of Finance in replying to a question asked by the Acting-Leader of the Opposition, caused Mr. W. A. Veitch (Wanganui) to move in the House of Representatives last night that the Legislative Btipartment's vote be reduced by £5..
"This simply means another no-con-Jidence motion^" objected the Minister of Labour (the Hon. G. J. Anderson).
Mr. G. W. Forbes (Hurunui): "You jare frightened of them?" "We have had a plethora of them this session," said Mr. Anderson, "and it has become so absurd that I rise to protest. If there was anything to be gained ■by it I could understand the hon. gentleman moving it, but he has nothing in the wide world to gain by it. . . .
1 suggest that he should -withdraw the motion, and not make his party and himself ridiculous in this way. After all is said and done, we have had six no-con-fidence motions already, and this is the Seventh. . * I don't know what the Prime Minister would say as to whether lie should' mako it a no-confidence motion or. not." (Laughter.) "Let if. go on the voices," suggested a Labour member. "VTinriroiH.lv tvlipn nnv vn(p. nr divi-
sion is moved in this House it is a noconfidence motion," said Mr. G. W,
Forbes (Hurunuij. . . "I suppose before the end of the session we will have seyenty instead of seven, because every motion is a no-confidence one. What is Parliament coming to when absolutely no latitude is to be allowed members? (Hear, hear.) The Minister of Marine gets up and makes this a no-confidence motion. The whole party seems to be taking a hand in making no-confidence motions. The idea of this motion is to extract an answer from the Minister of Finance. . .i I suppose when he gets up above three figures he begins to feel a little bit dizzy." (Laughter.) The motion was subsequently withdrawn, Opposition members claiming that they had achieved their purpose in commanding a reply from the Minister.
