INADEQUATE VENTILATION IN A MINE
(BS TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) GREYMOUTH, 25th May. Vv alter Leitch, manager of the Dob"son Mine, was charged in the Magistrate 8 Court this morning by the Mines Department with failing to ensure adequato ventilation at the mine. Inspector Strongman said that on 17tli April he visited the mine, and found the- conditions sueli that he immedi-' ately withdrew the men, gas beiug present. Proper records had not been kept. He was instructed to press for a heavy penalty. The defence pleaded that Leitch was away at Greymoutli, and the air hose had been disconnected for repairs during his absence. Mr.Mcldrum, S.M., convicted, and fined the defendant £5.
